Fairifeld resident's career inspires novel, 'Ready Player One''.

FAIRFIELD, IOWA — A Fairfield resident’s career is the inspiration behind a famous book and now a Steven Spielberg movie.

Ernest Cline, author of “Ready Player One” says his book is based off the career of Walter Day.

Back in the 1980s, Day founded Twin Galaxies in Ottumwa and created a scoreboard that gained international recognition.

Day says being the inspiration for this hit book and film feels surreal.

“It’s is so over the top and so out of what most people consider a normal experience that it’s actually hard to react to it,” said Day. “Like, it doesn’t change my life in anyways, and I don’t think about it,”

Since the 1980s, Ottumwa has been known as the video game capital of the world, setting the stage for “Ready Player One.”
